I Was Attacked by a Grandmother

It's often difficult to make younger mothers understand why their babies have to be poked and prodded when they're being seen by nurses and doctors. Lab work, x-rays, injections and other invasive and uncomfortable procedures are a necessary part of arriving at a valid diagnosis of the problem.

Many times the grandmother of the child comes to the ER with them. An extended family can be a valuable means of moral support for young inexperienced mothers. On the other hand, not allowing the actual mother the opportunity to be "the mother" can be a negative. In my opinion, this behavior sometimes is the catalyst of the "grandmother raising grandchild" cycle.

So, a few weeks ago while attempting to start an I.V. on a 14-month old, I wasn't surprised when the grandmother asked her daughter, who was crying hysterically, to leave the room.

Performing I.V. insertions on infants/children usually is a team effort - the technician, the muscle and the nurturer.

The Technician - the nurse performing the actual procedure. Nerves of steel and steady hands are crucial attributes this person must possess. Distractions from noise, crying, or hovering family members are no problem for this team member. Her priority is establishing a means to get medication to this very vulnerable patient quickly and efficiently.

The Muscle - usually another nurse. The brawn of the team. She keeps the child as still as possible. Her grip and take down maneuvers must be precise. Her presence helps prevent accidental or purposeful dislodging of the I.V.

The Nurturer - this can be family or staff. A sweet voice in the child's ear providing words of comfort to soothe the child; distraction through coaxing and praise often work well.

In spite of this team approach, it's usually always a stressful situation.

Unfortunately the first nurse wasn't able to get the I.V. started. Now the roles must change. She became the muscle and I transitioned into the role of the technician.

With skill, determination and an answered prayer, I started the I.V. NOW comes the part that can be more difficult than the needle stick - SECURING IT!

And it was during this critical period that the grandmother went bonkers!

She came flying across the room toward me crying and screaming "STOP IT! STOP IT! LEAVE MY GRANDBABY ALONE!" I'm thinking I must be dreaming. This old woman in this house coat and slippers with these curlers in her hair can't be serious. But she was.

Once I realized I wasn't dreaming the UNTHINKABLE happened. SHE SLAPPED ME ACROSS MY SHOULDER...not once but twice. Mind you, I'm trying to secure this screaming, fighting infant's I.V. and this IDIOT is hitting me.

At this point, the only thing I'm seeing is RED, BLOOD RED. Before she could land another blow, I shared the following with her without ever looking her way "Don't hit me again. We are here to help your grandchild. Calm down NOW"!

I really wasn't that upset with the little old lady. I sat and talked with her after the episode and stressed to her the importance of being a "good" support system for her young daughter and grandchild. She apologized and seemed ashamed of her behavior.

Needless to say I was the butt of many many jokes for the remainder of the shift.

Find Out As Much As You Can From Your Date

Getting to know that special woman is about the time you spend with her, and about what you get from communication, both verbal and physical. And the more you know, the better your chances. Thus if you plan to keep your relationship moving forward, you are going to have to find out as much as you can about her.

After all, the last thing you want to do is to upset her. That's a surefire way to kill your chances for romance. First, make sure you give her a chance not only to speak, but to start conversations as well. There is really no better way to get to know her than through the interaction you'll have with her in conversation. What you learn through all of this communication will serve as a great starting point, from which you can move on to the following suggestions to fill in any blanks in your knowledge of her.

The point of all of this is to get to know as much as you can about your woman as an individual. So many people think that all women or all men like the same things, which simply is not true.

Although there are a good number of things that a lot of women have in common, there are an equal number of things that they don’t have in common, either. The same can be said for men. For example, if a woman were to assume that all men love football then she’d be dead wrong! Likewise, a man would be wrong to assume that all women love cats. Each woman is unique, so you must take the time to find out what she, as a unique person, really wants before you can seduce her.

Ultimately, it all comes back to what you can learn about her for yourself. While it is helpful to get a few tips from her friends, family, and acquaintances, too much of this type of fact-finding will make her feel more like a suspect in an investigation. So it's back to what you can find out for yourself. And the best possible way to do that is to get her in different settings and see what happens.

Moving from one dwelling place to another is a normal scene in Singapore. A number of occupants are not home owners. They are just tenants. The reason is that owning a house is not easy especially for non Singaporean citizens who obviously make up the lion's share of Singapore's manpower. Trading Strategies in Forex, Stock and Futures Market

There are as many different trading strategies as there are traders. Generally they can be distinguished though by the time frame in which they take place. I suggest that every trader experiments with different strategies and then decide for himself what he is most comfortable with.

A) Longer term strategies (from a day trader perspective)

Investing: Investors buy shares of a certain company because they believe in its long-term growth perspective. They have little interest in most of the daily price movements and are looking to hold their shares for several years.

Swing trading: Swing trading means to hold stocks anywhere from one to five days and sometimes more. Swing traders try to take advantage of certain "key" situations in a stock price's movement. Such a situation would be a buy after a pullback into solid support during a longer term uptrend. Swing trading belongs to one of the easier to implement strategies and is excellent for people with small accounts.

B) Short term strategies

Momentum trading: A momentum trade usually lasts anywhere from 30 seconds to about 1 hour. Momentum trading is based on strong price movements and counter price movements often caused by news.

Breakout trading: breakouts (breakdowns) do occur in any time frame. Popular charts for breakout traders are 5 minute and 15 minute charts. The holding period is anywhere from a few seconds (breakout scalp) up to the end of the day. Breakout trading means to buy stock after it has broken out above a certain price. Vice versa for shorts.

Pullback trading: Pullback trading is the opposite of breakout trading. Pullback traders are looking for stock prices to pull back a significant enough amount (usually into support) in order for them to justify an entry (vice versa for shorts). Personally I am more of a breakout trader since I like the confirmation of the stock prices' movement that I get thru the breakout; although pullback trading often has the smaller stops though. The holding period is usually a few seconds up to an hour.

Scalping: Scalping describes "ultra short term" trading. Scalpers try to take advantage of very small price movements and sell their shares immediately when they have a big enough profit or the stock isn't moving in their direction or goes against them.

Cutting the spread: Cutting the spread can be seen as a scalping variety. Cutting the spread means to take advantage of the spread (the price difference between the bid and the ask price). It means to buy a stock on the bid side and to sell it immediately afterward on the ask side for a small profit. Since the decimalization of the markets this type of trading has certainly become much more difficult because spreads have gotten much smaller.

I have been making 50% returns on my investment every week from forex. I make almost $24,000 every month. To know my secret, visit http://instant-profits-in-investment.blogspot.com/

To Buy - Or Not to Buy? The Travel Cot

From nature calls to vibrating mattresses, light shows to side curtains, travel cots have more features than a cinema. But do you actually need one?

Also known as portable cots or portacots, travel cots are useful for the frequent traveler. Whilst many are loaded with features that you most likely won't use, the most basic models serve their purpose well.

Features include removable change tables (which sit atop the cot), toy mobiles, full-sized bassinettes and voice activated night lights. Generally, the more features, the heavier the cot. Carefully consider which features you can get buy without; the median weight is 9-11kg.

The most comfortable travel cots have bases which can be elevated; similar to a regular cot, this is great if you have a bad back and will travel often with a newborn. Look for side panels made from mesh rather than regular fabric for good ventilation, and a mesh cover if you're going to use the cot outdoors or camping.

Mattresses are not usually included with the more basic models. Rather than using towels to soften the base or buying an expensive (and cumbersome) mattress, you can buy a 'fitted' mattress. The Sleepover is a padded, fitted sheet which cannot be removed by the babe, can be fully laundered and can be squished easily into the travel cot bag.

So is it worth buying a travel cot if you don't travel often?

Most hotels and guest houses provide travel cots for a small charge (and often for free). Simply take your own cot linen. Alternatively, baby hire businesses hire out travel cots for as little as $5 per day, and most organise a courier to deliver and collect. If you only plan to travel a handful of times, this may be the best value option.

Another significant benefit of hiring the cot (and any other equipment) is that you won't need to lug it on the plane, and it won't take up valuable space in the car. The majority are bulky and cumbersome to transport, and with some weighing up to 14kg, you could end up paying more in freight than the cost of the cot.

If you're going to travel mostly during the newborn period, then consider a pram with a bassinette. This may be a more economical option, and if you are going to take the pram traveling with you anyway, it will mean less equipment to lug!

So is there a smaller alternative?

Relatively new on the market are tent-like travel cots. Phil&Ted's Traveller weights 2.5kg and is small enough to fit into the pram's basket when folded - and it won't tip you over your weight allowance when flying. The downside is that the baby lies at floor level (on an inflatable mattress) so it can be uncomfortable to lower down and pick up your baby.

Remember, every baby (and parent) is different, and will have their own hidden agenda. To buy... or not to buy? You be the judge!
